Applications and advantages of CFRP Carbon Profiles
CFRP Carbon Profiles are extruder-produced modified plastics made from thermoplastic resins filled with a short-cut or long-cut Carbon fibers or continuous Carbon fibers. With high mechanical properties, strength is not inferior to metal, can replace aluminum alloy, copper, steel, and so on.
Made of fiber and polypropylene, carbon fiber is heat-resistant, has lower specific gravity than aluminum and glass fiber, and is as strong as steel and aluminum when combined with plastic. However, the cost of CFRP is much higher than that of GFRP (glass fiber reinforced plastic), which is mostly limited to aerospace and sporting goods.
In 1979, Ford Motor Company published a new idea of using GFRP to make light experimental vehicles, in which using CFRP of about 300kg, the fuel consumption can be reduced by about 35%.
